Algiz ("Al-jiz") is a representation of the Norse God Heimdall, the god of crossroads guardian of entrances, with one hand with the fingers parted and elk horns on the other. The parted fingers symbolize protection against evil, while the horns are a symbol of protection and ownership. While Algiz means protection and defense, another name for this rune is Elhaz that translates to elk or stag. Algiz was very commonly carved on the shields and weapons of warriors as a mark of protection from any harm.

Algiz connects us with our higher spiritual self where we can find peace and be awakened, something that can make us feel safe in this world.

Its symbol can be seen as a hand reaching out to heaven, communicating with the gods and other entities throughout this and other worlds. It can also represent the antlers of an elk, or a flower opening to receive the sun, the next and final rune of Heimdall’s Aett.
