27 THE MUTANT

I will take care of myself.

After a hard day’s work on the starship, she heads to her quarters to unwind. It was an especially stressful shift where things didn’t go to plan. But it’s going to be okay; she did her best and will try again tomorrow. She turns off her communicator, washes away the grime and settles in for a night just to herself. Looking in the mirror, she unbraids her hair, admiring everything that makes her unique.

The Mutant is comfortable with herself, flaws and all. When she makes mistakes, she forgives herself and moves on. She respects the person she has grown to be. Her mind is a safe and nurturing place; she knows the only approval she needs is her own. The Mutant encourages you to be there for yourself, no matter what. When you need self-care or some encouraging words, do it for yourself; no-one can do it better. You are unique and beautiful, alien or human, no matter what society tells you. The Mutant’s advice is this: give yourself a break, go to your favourite place in the galaxy, do what gives you joy and be kind to yourself.

Too often, we’re our own harshest critics. It can take time and practice to start being more kind to yourself. Try monitoring your internal dialogue: what do you say to yourself? Would you say that to others? What makes you unique? It would be so boring if we all looked like social-media models. Embrace your special qualities! They are beautiful too. ❤️
