Symbolic Associations
The scallop has many associations across multiple religions. It is affiliated with the Roman goddess Venus, and the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, making it a symbol of femininity and as a vessel. In Christianity, it is associated the apostle St. James, and was a popular icon among pilgrims journeying to his shrine in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. This gives the scallop its association with travel.
Shell Ridges Symbolism
An interesting thing to note is the ridges along the shell which converge together to one focal point at the base. To Christians, this is symbolic of the many pilgrims journeying to a holy site, while in Celtic society, it resembles the sun’s rays during sunset.
