54. THE ABYSS

BUILDING OUT OF CHAOS. UPHEAVAL. SHADOW WORK. REGENERATION. PLANTING NEW SEEDS.

From the dark, the light is sown.

More than eighty percent of the ocean is still uncharted. Within this great expanse, our earthly waters are some of the least understood places in the universe. At the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the sea, the water is characterized by zero visibility, crushing pressure, and extremely cold temperatures. This mysterious place is part of a network of massive trenches that cut across the ocean floor. These are formed when two tectonic plates forcefully collide, as one of the plates breaks and dives beneath the other.

If it weren't for the formation of these earthly scars - through their continuous shifting, breaking, and releasing - the oceans would be devoid of essential nutrients. They would, instead, be a frigid, barren void, where life would not be able to take hold or flourish. Cloaked in perpetual darkness, this disruptive force remains unseen, yet it has been essential to our existence. We know that nature becomes expansive when it breaks into new cycles of regeneration out of chaos, just as the Mariana Trench teaches us. Like the death of a star before it is reborn into a supernova, we can also reach cataclysmic tipping points when our world begins to crumble, and our inner landscape shifts. From here, we rebuild out of the ashes. Seed by seed, we plant again, and life returns, thriving.

This card may come when you or someone you love is forced to reconcile an insurmountable challenge. It may suddenly seem as though life has been flipped upside down, just when you felt safe or settled. This is the disintegration of some kind of comfort. The best solution may be to let the energy of the situation self-destruct and run its course, so that you may begin anew from a fresh foundation. Surrender to the waves, and let them take you to calmer waters.

After this experience, you will be more resilient than ever before. Courageous compassion is a gift that comes with our own inner alchemy; through feeling into the depths of our greatest challenges, and seeing them as catalysts for the most beautiful gems of self-love that we can hold. This is where your power accumulates and expands - not in the easy moments, nor through coasting life in shallow waters. Every so often, we are meant to go deep, to find ourselves in the abyss.
