The Voice
The voice can be a powerful tool but many of us do not use our voices in an empowering way. You can use words to express beauty, love, trust or commitment, encourage, tell stories of adventure or speak your intentions out loud, making them real beyond the confines of your mind. Your voice can also be a weapon, putting yourself and others down. Your words can be used to share stories that were not yours to tell or convince you to see dangers that are only a figment of your imagination. How you choose to express your thoughts and feelings makes a difference, and the value of your words does matter.
Use Words for Good
Poetry has appeared in your reading to remind you to use your words for good. Do not give in to the desire to spread gossip or to speak to yourself or others with poisonous venom. A little criticism may appear harmless, but you never know which word could be the breaking point. It could be the thing that sends someone over the edge on a day that was just a little too difficult to bear. Your words can be just as harmful to you. You may tell yourself things like you aren’t pretty, are too fat, not good enough or basic, and while it may seem like a small thing today, one unkind sentence said just once a day for years can add up to hundreds and even thousands of times you’ve bullied yourself.

Writing a Poem
Writing a poem is an excellent way of expressing yourself and your emotions. Poetry allows you to express your truth and helps you uncover hidden stories within yourself that would otherwise remain buried. When writing a poem for self-expression it’s important to focus on the topic you’re exploring, be it joy, sorrow, longing or hope. Choose words that resonate with your heart and feelings and don’t limit yourself by set rules and conventions.
Use of Imagery and Symbolism
Take your time with each word, phrase, verse and stanza, using imagery and symbolism to help record your story. Feel free to write about anything that comes to mind, from your painful past or an unresolved issue in your life to the beauty of a sunrise. Whatever you decide to write about, allow yourself to feel fully as you do so. These prompts will help you:
Poetry Prompts
Think of a time when you felt joy, sorrow or any other emotion. How did it make you feel? Write about a moment in your life that shaped who you are today. Describe the beauty that can be found in nature and its healing power. Look to the stars and contemplate your place in this world. Capture the essence of a person who has had an impact on your life: how have they changed you? Reflect on how music or art has affected your emotions and outlook on life. Express gratitude for all that is good in your life, no matter how small.
