Card 30 • wands

Nine of Wands

Brief Description

The Nine of Wands depicts weary perseverance after a demanding effort: the performers are exhausted but still standing, sustained by a final, fading buzz. It cautions that this remaining energy is temporary—more smoke than lasting flame—and not meant to carry you indefinitely. The card warns against mistaking a second wind for sustainable strength, as pushing too far risks a painful collapse. Ultimately it advises recognizing limits, withdrawing to rest, and allowing recovery after exertion.

Ally

The tired performers stand with their extinguished wands at the front of the stage to accept their applause. They have worked hard and are exhausted. Their muscles ache, and sweat drips under their very hot, fireproof suits, but they did it. They got through the entire performance, and they are all still standing. The smoke from their wands is still in performance mode, showing that even though the fire is going out, the energy is still very much present. This is the final buzz that is keeping the performers upright, and it is just enough to take their last stance and move from the stage. As the energy fades away, however, they will get more and more tired, and they will need to rest.

Challenger

This energy you are feeling right now is not meant to last. In fact, it is fleeting and more smoke than fire. You may be mistaking it for a second burst of energy, and as something that will sustain you, but won't, and if you are not careful, you will crash. Your body can only deal with so much at any given time, and right now it is coming to the end of its reserves. You might think you can keep pushing, but this would be a mistake, and one you will regret.

Visual Description

A row of nine shadowy figures stands along a curved dark foreground against a backdrop of vertical, fiery columns. Each figure holds a wand or staff aloft, some in defensive or weary postures, and two at the edges bend forward. Spiralling smoke and a sprinkling of stars rise from the wands and coalesce into a large lion-like face in the upper portion of the image. A red banner at the bottom reads "NINE OF WANDS".
