Card 15

The Devil

Brief Description

The Devil emphasizes the magnetic power of fully claiming one’s identity and the spectacle that such unflinching presence can create. It also warns that power can become addictive and serve as a form of enslavement when used to project inner wounds or to intimidate others. The card urges careful self-knowledge before making bargains or embracing authority, because whatever lies in your depths will be amplified outward. Ultimately, it calls for honest ownership of self so power is wielded consciously rather than unconsciously.

Ally

The Devil really does love a good show. Especially one where the lines between the viewed and the viewer are a little skewed. The Devil may be seated in the middle of the stage, but who is performing for who? She has a captive audience of two, and now she comes to observe all those who have gathered for the spectacle. Isn't it amazing how much power the Devil has just by being who she is and never deviating from her mission or her sense of self? There is a lesson here about power, thought, and self-identity. When you can claim who you are, fully and completely, you will be powerful. Sure, some people may find that intimidating, but overall, most people will be in awe of you, and dare I say it, captivated by you.

Challenger

Power can be addicting. That in and of itself does not make power bad, and for the most part, power gets a bad rap. But when it becomes an addiction, a form of enslavement, it may mean you have some underlying issues that you are trying to work through in an unhealthy way. Those who abuse their power, or deliberately use it to intimidate and disempower others, are projecting their wounds. You see, power is an amplifier. Whatever is already in you will be amped up and sent into the world like a ripple effect. The Devil knows this small consequence of the gift she offers. Therefore, before you hurry in and make that deal, make sure you know who you are and what lies in the murky depths of your soul, because that is what will be unleashed once the Devil grants your wish. There really is a Devil in the details.

Visual Description

A horned, green-clad figure lounges on a high, heart-shaped tufted chair, holding a short whip and a leash. The leash runs to a kneeling man bound in leather straps, while a red-haired figure crouches behind him. Empty birdcages hang from above against a draped, star-patterned curtain and warm yellow-green light fills the scene. A red banner at the bottom reads "XV • THE DEVIL".
