Nine of Swords
The Nine of Swords represents intense anxiety and sleeplessness, reflecting a mind overwhelmed by worries and fears about the future. It signifies the struggles with uncontrollable outcomes and the exhaustion that accompanies these thoughts. When inverted, this card deepens the meaning, indicating a state of depression rather than mere sadness, where hopelessness and emotional pain take center stage.

Anxiety and Sleeplessness
The first question I ask when I see this card is “Why aren’t you sleeping?” This is about anxiety and sleeplessness. A pain in your stomach, a wrinkle on your forehead. All of these things come with the Nine of Swords. Your mind is too full, your troubles seem vast and unmanageable, and you just can’t put them down. Anxiety comes when we can’t control the outcome of something. What if I have a disease? What if they don’t love me? What if I fail? The uncontrolled dizziness that comes while we’re spinning around, trying to figure out what our life will look like. It’s exhausting yet keeps us from sleep.
Nine of Swords Inverted
When you read reversals, please be sure that you don’t just assume that they’re the opposite of the reading. Sometimes they’re a deepening of the upright card, and that’s the case in the Nine of Swords. This is the card for depression. Not sadness—depression. Essentially, the anxiety of the Nine of Swords has turned over, the swords on the wall are falling, and there is pain and hopelessness.
