Nine of Swords
The Nine of Swords represents acute mental anguish, anxiety, and the haunted thoughts that disturb sleep and twist dreams into nightmares. These fears may stem from unresolved loss, trauma, guilt, responsibility, or brain chemistry, and can persist if earlier challenges remain unmet. The card's purpose is corrective: it interrupts destructive thought cycles, urges a reality check to distinguish real threats from ghosts, and calls attention to mental health needs. Its imagery of sharp household tools suggests practical mental tools and supports can aid recovery, and the admonition to "turn on the lights" encourages seeking clarity and action.

Meaning
The 9 of Swords is what keeps us up at night. These are the swirling worries and phantoms that won't let us rest, the anxieties and fears that jolt us awake, the haunted thoughts that dog us beyond the veil of sleep and twist our dreams to nightmares. If we haven't risen to the liberatory challenge of the previous card, the 9 of Swords is where we will end up. Alternately, this state of mental anguish can arise from life events, losses, trauma old and new, guilt, responsibility, or plain old-fashioned brain chemistry.
Purpose
But no card in the Tarot shows up in order to hurt us; all are intended to help us through the challenges of life. The 9 of Swords is here to help us navigate the really tough stuff, the most difficult mental environments, the dark nights of the soul.
Intervention
It does this by interrupting our thought cycles and reminding us to check in with reality. What of our perceived monsters are real, and what are just ghosts? How are we supporting our mental health at this time? As we learned in the 3 of Swords, our thoughts can help as well as hurt. What mental tools do we have at our disposal?
Imagery
The nine sharp and pointy instruments in our card appear ghostly and devilish, but in fact many are just normal household tools. A saw helps to build a home, a butcher knife to feed ourselves, a needle to sew a hem or a heart. Likewise, we can equip ourselves with mental tools to aid us in times of high anxiety and grief. That's what this card is all about.
Advice
A nightmare is scariest in the dark. Turn on the lights.

Visual Description
The card shows the word "FIFTH SPIRIT © CLAIRE BURGESS" across the lower image and the numeral X at the very bottom. A dead bird lies on its back in a shallow pool, its body pierced by ten long pins that read as swords, feathers splayed and one wing folded beneath it. Above, an illuminated egg-shaped halo contains a skeletal chick or fledgling, surrounded by radiating lines against a black sky where a few elongated drops fall.
