Card 31 • wands

Ten of Wands

Brief Description

The Ten of Wands represents the culmination of a suit's energy where accomplishments and responsibilities have piled into an overwhelming burden. It signals that you're nearing energetic burnout and need to take a break, delegate tasks, or ask for help because carrying everything alone is unsustainable. Fear of being a burden or of others mishandling tasks can keep you from releasing some wands, but hoarding risks burning out and losing it all. The card advises finding a more sustainable way of living and working, letting go of some load so the fire has room to breathe and burn steadily.

Keywords

Nearing burnout, feeling overwhelmed or overburdened, taking on too much.

Meaning

All Tens show a culmination of the energy of their suit, a peak point where the actions and decisions made along the way coalesce. In the 10 of Wands, we have successfully acquired all the wands, all the creative projects and career advancements and leadership roles, all the accolades and attention and respect—and all of that piles up to a whole lot of responsibility. The 10 of Wands shows us at a point where we have a burden of riches, a mighty load of wands, and we perhaps can't carry them all.

Interpretation

When this card appears in a reading, it's a signal that we're nearing energetic burnout. We need to take a break, delegate some tasks, or ask for help. Sometimes, we're hesitant to ask for help because we're afraid of being a burden (utter nonsense) or because we think no one else can do the work as well as we can (rather full of ourselves, aren't we?). Other times, we're afraid that if we put down one wand, someone else will snatch it up—and they might, but we have enough wands to go around. The fact is, we can't maintain this level of energetic output for much longer, and if we try to, we're likely to flame out and lose all ten wands. In order to move forward, we need to find a new and more sustainable way of living and working. We don't have to do it all. As any Scout knows, a campfire needs wood but it also needs oxygen. Pile on too many logs, and they'll smother the fire. Leave it enough room to breathe, and it'll burn for hours.

A young person stands full-length against a plain pale background. They hold a small sprig-like wand in their left hand and raise a glowing lightbulb in their right hand. They wear glasses, a beige jacket over a white shirt, dark slim trousers and green shoes, and have short curly red hair. A cross-hatched shadow falls behind them and the title "PAGE OF WANDS" appears at the bottom of the card.
