Card 16

The Tower

Brief Description

The Tower represents sudden, dramatic change and the destruction of false security. An explosion from the heavens destroys the tower, forcing its inhabitants to fall from their protected heights. This card symbolizes the universe providing unexpected liberation when we don't seek freedom ourselves, destroying illusions and material attachments that imprison the soul. While nothing can prepare us for such upheaval, choosing to leave our limitations voluntarily can help us avoid being forcibly ejected from our comfort zones.

The Apocalyptic Explosion

An explosion from the heavens destroys the Tower, creating an immense apocalypse, and those who dwelt within its walls fall from great heights. The Tower was built so impregnable that, while protecting its inhabitants, it ended up imprisoning them within their own creation.

The Fall of False Security

The Tower loses its stability, and magnificent gilded domes are swept away by the hurricane. Worldly wealth and illusions of security mean little to the soul that demands liberation.

Universal Liberation

If you do not seek freedom on your own, the Universe may provide it for you in unexpected ways. Nothing can prepare you for the journey from the exploded Tower, but if you freely step beyond the boundaries of your small enclosure, you can avoid being forcibly ejected from it against your will.

Keywords

sudden change, complete transformation of consciousness; destruction leading to creation; shock, awakening.

Visual Description

A tall stone tower stands on a craggy peak, struck by lightning with flames bursting from its windows. A golden crown is shown tumbling from the top while two robed figures fall headlong from the tower into the stormy air. Dark clouds and jagged bolts fill the sky, and the Roman numeral "XVI" appears at top and bottom of the card.
