Character Description
The High Priest is the Witch Pope of the Sabbath. He is the officiant of sacred rites to the Devil and through his ritual, he manifests real results. He was once Étienne Guibourg, the rogue Catholic priest of 17th-century France who led Black Masses and sacrificed babies to enact powerful spells (Robbins 82). He stands in his cathedral, perfectly formed and reconsecrated to his dark Master. Before him is the Infernal Grimoire that lays out the exact method of his witchcraft which he follows to the letter. He has a profound passion for ritual and ceremony and does not go against tradition. From his ebony pulpit, he preaches to honor tradition, observe ritual, and attain vast amounts of knowledge.
Divinatory Meaning (Invoked)
The High Priest invoked signifies that you appreciate the ceremony and ritual of spirituality, the functional aesthetics and symbolic gestures that invoke power. You learn from only the most trusted of sources and anything that deviates from credible information is worthless to you. Because you are so secure in your knowledge, you sometimes come off as orthodox in your beliefs. You like being appreciated as a source of knowledge and value academic and religious institutions, which can include those found in religions outside monotheism. You gain knowledge by learning the foundations of the subject and working your way from there. You seek out teachers and mentors who have proven experience, and you too often become this for others. When you speak about subjects you have mastered, you tend to attract audiences who eagerly listen and applaud you. You are extremely gifted in answering life’s tough questions, and have a firm understanding of the order of the Cosmos.
Divinatory Meaning (Banished)
When the High Priest is banished in a reading, it is not necessarily bad. It typically indicates you live a very freethinking, bohemian lifestyle. You value religious intuition rather than tradition and oftentimes have a 'take as you please' attitude toward spirituality. You have no use for complicated ritual and prefer things simple. Typically, you embrace ideas that challenge or are in opposition to the standard way of thinking. Be careful not to accept too many unorthodox ideologies, as you may appear insincere and just following the trend. You may also embrace concepts and methods that are inadvertently spiritually polluting or destructive, so listen to your instinct and common sense. The High Priest banished can also warn of physical abuse from a mentor, teacher, or authority figure. Pay attention to the warning signs and make sure you don’t get too bewitched by the unconventional.
