Symbolism
The first thing that catches the eye are not the figures in funeral attire with flowers in their buttonholes representing the elements. The bird, already familiar to us as a symbol of Spirit, illuminates the birth of this child. This child is surrounded by red flowers – love, the world already loves him, and green stems are drawn to him like a magnet – opportunities, financial and material growth. All figures stand on a 'cemetery,' but all the 'tombstones' are in the form of Aztec temples, ziggurats. If you look closely, a dried stem holds the male figure by the left leg and possibly pulls him down, as if lowering the importance of feelings. A centipede crawling out of the small coffin seems to say that foundations, dogmas, and stereotypes have been cast aside – it is leaving. The 4 main characters represent the 4 elements, the suits.
