Card 70 • pentacles

Seven of Pentacles

Brief Description

The Seven of Pentacles represents disappointment with results that fall short of expectations. While some progress or reward is achieved, it's significantly less than hoped for. The card embodies the frustration of receiving only a fraction of what was desired, whether in relationships, career, or financial matters. It highlights the gap between dreams and reality, suggesting a need to reassess expectations and recognize that material pursuits may not bring the satisfaction originally anticipated.

Symbolism

The character serves as a male version of the Santissima. The calculations show that although there are 7 pentacle-shards, he's setting aside only one. This is a beautiful and humorous transfer of Waite's idea from older decks. When he's dissatisfied with the result, he wants more, but today only 1 pentacle-shard is given to him. It represents a system of futile efforts and struggles in financial matters. He's surrounded by purely green stems—a symbol of material absorption. In the background, we see the familiar 'death day' cards from the Five of Wands.

Card's Message

A person finds themselves in a situation where they received less than they wanted. They got something, but much less than expected.

Relationships

The same principle applies to relationships. Let's say Masha thought she would marry Vasya and that's it—here's the happy life, everything will be fine. But Vasya might cheat, drink away money, and doesn't earn as much as she'd like. On one hand, the wish was fulfilled—she got Vasya. But where's the happiness? Again, we see the motif of illusions.

Career

A small promotion, maybe a little bonus, but there's also a shadow aspect that may involve losing money. Some plans that were conceived didn't work out.

Money

We receive some pittance. A small percentage of what we would have liked.

Visual Description

A lone figure in a patterned poncho and wide-brimmed hat stands behind a series of horizontal rods on which seven skull-shaped metal pentacles are mounted. Vines and roots creep across the frame, partially obscuring the figure, and festive banners reading "DIA DE MUERTOS" hang in the background. The word "PENTACLES" is printed along the bottom and the numeral 7 appears in the card margins.
