Card 55 • swords

Six of Swords

Brief Description

The Six of Swords represents a journey toward new beginnings and transformation, guided by wisdom and spiritual insight. Like defeated warriors being ferried to safety, this card indicates leaving behind old struggles and moving toward better circumstances. The journey may involve new learning, relationships, or career opportunities, emphasizing the need to seek fortune and fulfillment in unexplored territories rather than clinging to familiar but unfruitful paths.

Symbolism

Our ferryman here is the Hierophant, transporting defeated warriors to the other side of the river. They will find their refuge, their calling. He carries them toward a completely new life. The yellow flowers represent material ascension, while the water—like the material world on the card—symbolizes everything earthly. It's remarkable how the sky plays above his oar. On the left side it's blue, on the right side it's golden. He's carrying them toward luck and good fortune. It's no coincidence that Listrani depicted the color dorado here.

Card's Message

New shores await the person, and they need to set off toward them. Perhaps they have already begun. Travel, new learning, relationships. Relationships—push away from old foundations and relationships, and sail toward new shores. But if together they endure these changes, then together they can set off toward new shores. Career—seek new work, a new position, or new ideas and projects. Money—don't look for money where you're looking; it exists elsewhere.

Visual Description

A skeletal, cloaked ferryman with a long beard and a wide hat stands in a narrow wooden boat, gripping a tall pole. The boat's hull is lined with six swords and carries other skeletal figures huddled together. Calm rippling water surrounds the vessel while yellow flowers and falling leaves frame the sky above.
