Description of the Image
She breaks through to the surface. The water ripples at her approach, and then she bursts through this barrier to reach the rocks. Water streams from her hair and shoulders. She flicks a rainbow of sparkling droplets from her tail. Like diamonds, they scatter in the air, then disappear beneath the surface.
She lies there, calm and holding her breath until she is sure that no one is pursuing her. Who could it be? They have eyes, minds, and feelings only in the world under the waves. But she waits nonetheless. She wants to be sure she is alone. She is tired of existing in an endless sea dance.
The ripples from her appearance smooth out, and soon the water's surface becomes a transparent mirror. The blue of the sky transitions into the blue of the water in a seamless blend of colors and light. Her mind momentarily clears of dreamy contemplation. She sees her reflection for the first time. She is struck by her own beauty—not out of vanity, but from the enchantment of discovery. She gazes into the reflected eyes, which resemble tiny pools of water. She reaches out to touch this creature that gazes back at her so intently. At the sudden touch, her fingers meet the water's surface, and the image shatters into countless fragments.
She shudders and only then realizes she is not as alone as she first thought. Despite the sea dwellers leaving her to herself, the air sylphs have sneakily crept close while she was distracted, studying her intently and amusing themselves by mimicking her. Suddenly, a coolness is felt in the air, running along her drying skin, and she yearns for the comforting embrace of the sea and her family.
