Description of the Image
He is a seeker who has turned his back on the noise, glitter, and madness of the world. In the city, the fragile light of the stars is drowned out by the dazzling brilliance and fog of life. He takes his lantern, telling a wise woman that it contains a piece of a star which knows its way home. A lonely beam of light leads him past valleys and high above a shimmering lake, its surface a liquid mirror. His star-lantern shows the way, he does not know where he is heading, but each step illuminates the next, and the next, and the next.
He ascends a distant peak, clear from the smog of humanity, and when he secludes himself, the air fills with a living fragrance. Until his first breath of this purity, he did not realize how much he missed it, and his body seemed to ache as if it couldn't exist without this breath of life. Others have been here before him, but the ascent remains unspoiled, with no signs of their passage. Such is the nature of the place, that everyone who comes there is the first and only, and no one else will enter until the current visitor is forgotten.
It is a long journey, and during this transition, his eyes fully adapt to the darkness of solitude. He forgets the city. The star in his lantern shines hot and bright, while its sisters in the sky swirl in a joyful dance.
Meaning
An introspective person seeking solitude, withdrawn from the world, offering or receiving guidance. The Hermit is an inspiring friend and teacher, and his help can shed light on the mysteries of someone's own mind. What was mysterious can become clear through the right understanding of the situation. Loons glide on silent wings beyond the horizon, elusive shadows of the night. They symbolize peace and serenity, and their haunting cry, echoing along the waterway, is laden with ancient wisdom. Loons are also revered for their knowledge of celestial, marine, and forest worlds, often seen in the headdresses of Native American chiefs.
