Description of the Image

“You elves of hills, brooks, standing lakes and groves, / And ye that on the sands with printless foot / Do chase the ebbing Neptune, and do fly him / When he comes back; you demi-puppets that / By moonshine do the green sour ringlets make / Whereof the ewe not bites” / Shakespeare, The Tempest (Act V, Scene 1), translated by Mikhail Donskoy.

The vigilant eye of the Sun is closed and the sharpness with which the day illuminates the world becomes unclear and blurred. The Moon rises over its domain to watch over those who begin to emerge from their hiding places on this side of the world. A magical ring of mushrooms glistens in these soft, silvery waves. As moments pass and twilight sets in, it glows brighter and brighter with its own phosphorescent glow, lighting the way for the Queen of the Fairytale Kingdom.

“She is coming!” – shouts the elves in the wind, with voices so beautiful they drive mortals mad with longing. “Make way!” – call the wandering lights, darting through the forest like arrows. They sparkle and glitter, teasing and leading astray any passerby, but tonight, there is no human toy for them to grab onto. The dryads wring their hands in the dusky birches and drop their leaves as they slightly step forward to be handmaidens to the approaching Queen. As she glides through the forest, anemones spring up under her bare feet, and she smiles, beginning to dance.

Make way! Make way! / Night reigns, / Drawing into a dance, banishing the day! / With mad enchantment, listen to our song: / Here there is neither sorrow nor heavy thoughts, / Nothing holds in secret, and no secret is revealed, / For all that is done in the magical ring / Is boundless, wild energy. / Let the senses take wing!

Meaning

Fears and anxieties, trust in illusions, overcoming distortions, chasing fantasy, dreams, and visions, disorientation. Fairies are masters of illusion, and the dangers of entering the magical mushroom ring are widely known. The Moon is a realm beyond the known, comfortable, and predictable. It is another world, wondrous and inspiring in itself but threatening and dangerous if treated disrespectfully. It is easy to be a lost traveler, distracted by wandering lights and misled to wander in the forests; but if understanding what is what, one can glimpse beyond the sunny reality, and that is a rare honor and most inspiring magic. It is a path to the mysteries of the unknown, and a source of mixed darkness and light that flows from there. This is the gift of the Moon.
