Her flickering candle is likened to either a guiding light or a metaphorical spark of inspiration. The number three is engraved into her sewing machine, which accompanies intricate knots of golden filigree.
Symbolism
The symbolism evoked by The Empress resonates with several characters in The Major Arcana and is further conveyed through the red fabric, which will clothe many: The Magician in his quest for knowledge, the monastery floor of The Hierophant, The Charioteer in his journey of self-discovery, and the rider of The Sun who basks in triumph over adversity. The rippling fabric may also symbolize The Empress's organic connection with Mother Earth, femininity, and the changing tides below.
Personal Connection
The antique sewing machine featured in this composition once belonged to Yia-yia, my great-grandmother. I discovered Yia-Yia's Tarot deck as a child, and it would later inspire me to create The Soumia Tarot. Many of my great-grandmother's belongings are peppered throughout the series to honor her in perceptivity. The figure within The Empress is a physical representation of a female entity that I frequently encounter during Sleep Paralysis.
