Card 54 • swords

Five of Swords

Brief Description

This card draws from the Norse myth of Fenrir the wolf, chained underground with a sword between his jaws, destined to break free at Ragnarök and kill Odin in revenge. It teaches that all means are fair in struggle, and sometimes we must show different sides of ourselves and stop avoiding conflicts. Even if losses and sacrifices of position or resources are required, defending our own interests and principles is worth the cost.

Mythological Foundation

The mighty wolf Fenrir was chained underground and a sword was thrust between his jaws. But on the day of Ragnarök, he will break his bonds and kill Odin in revenge for his imprisonment.

The Nature of Conflict

This card teaches that in struggle, all means are justified, and sometimes we need to show ourselves from different angles and stop avoiding conflicts.

Sacrifice and Principles

Even if we must lose something or someone, sacrifice position or resources, it is worth it—our own interests and principles are more important.

Visual Description

A large dark wolf's head fills the upper portion of the card, mouth open to reveal teeth and a single yellow eye. A textured golden disc sits between its jaws, intersected by a pale horizontal sword-like mark. Below, five swords are depicted with their blades pointing upward, each rendered with distinct hilts and straight shafts. A Roman numeral V is centered near the bottom edge of the scene against a muted, star-speckled background.
