Ghosts and Spirits tarot
The Ghosts and Spirits Tarot was created by acclaimed watercolor artist Lisa Hunt and published by U.S. Games Systems in 2012. Hunt is a phenomenal researcher known for her culturally rich tarot work (she also created the Fantastical Creatures Tarot and the Shapeshifter Tarot). The deck contains 79 cards — the standard 78 plus a special bonus card for questions requiring deeper reflection. It won the 2013 Readers' Choice/About.com Award for Best Tarot Deck and was named to Aeclectic Tarot's List of Top Ten Decks Published in 2012. The deck also has an official digital app available on iOS and Android through The Fool's Dog.
Official Website →Art Style & Visual Character
Lisa Hunt's art is rendered in intricate vintage-style authentic watercolor illustrations. The palette is predominantly subdued and soft — ethereal mists, twilight blues, spectral greens — with occasional cards (like the 10 of Cups) featuring stronger, more vivid colors. The ghosts and spirits seem to materialize out of the paint itself, giving each card an otherworldly, translucent quality. Yellow-aged borders on the front side add a haunting old-world feel. The cardstock from U.S. Games is excellent — sturdy yet comfortable to shuffle, even for smaller hands. Each image is rich with detail that rewards close examination.
Core Concept & Symbolism
The deck illustrates each card with a specific ghost, spirit, or supernatural entity drawn from world folklore, mythology, and legend — spanning cultures from every continent. Hunt's extensive research ensures each spirit is authentic to its cultural origin, from Japanese yurei to Celtic banshees to African ancestral spirits. The Little White Book provides the type of ghost or spirit depicted, its cultural lore, and the connection to traditional tarot meaning. This framework transforms readings into encounters with the spirit world, using supernatural messengers to shed light on human experiences and dissolve barriers between conscious thought and deeper inner reflection.
Reading Experience
The deck is praised as working beautifully for readers of any experience level willing to engage with Hunt's unique interpretive framework. Reviewers note that "a great reading should leave you excited and energized, and this deck does exactly that." The Little White Book is considered exceptionally well-written — it contextualizes each spirit's story while providing clear card interpretations. For serious tarot students, advanced readers, and collectors, it is described as "a must-have." The community values the deck's cultural breadth and research depth. The art draws readers into contemplation, and the supernatural theme adds an evocative layer to readings without veering into mere shock value.
