Symbolism

Standing stones or menhirs are symbols of authority, boundary markers, and monuments. As objects of power and balance, unyielding and strong, combining spiritual and earthly energies, they were once meeting places where the community resolved issues and personal conflicts in the presence of the gods. In a circle of smaller stones, the community council gathered to make fair decisions, after hearing evidence and announcing the verdict. The tradition of engraving societal laws on stone obelisks or tablets relates to the power of the megalith and here conveys the major concepts of Craft practice.

Engravings

On the stone is engraved the symbol of the triquetra, related to the triune goddess, scales to weigh the facts for a balanced and impartial decision, embodying the main ethical principle of the Craft 'do no harm', representing justice and compassion, as well as a labyrinth, signifying the path that must be taken to understand the essence of the problem and to find the truth. The path leading to the stone goes through a dark forest and despite this, the light of truth breaks through the trees and illuminates the stone, showing that the truth will be revealed.

Appearing in a Spread

When this arcana appears in a spread, it speaks of objectivity. The stone shows that information has been gathered and the issue thoroughly considered, thus, the decision made can be trusted. In combination with the King of Swords, it indicates a legal matter or court decision. The success of the issue should be judged by the surrounding cards.

Dark Forest

The dark forest indicates that nature is also just, as alongside the law, there is also the law of retribution, karma, and vengeance, which work through the actions of those making decisions and thus bring the scales into a state of balance.

Green Meadow

A small green meadow strewn with daisies symbolizes truth, authority, harmony, and communication, while the spider – a symbol of strength, wisdom, and balance – weaves its web between the stones in the circle.
