Queen of Swords
The Queen of Swords represents a woman who uses intellect to govern emotion, prioritizing reason, independence, and methodical action. Historically maligned as cold, masculine, or barren, the card has been reinterpreted to affirm women's autonomy, careers, and independent decision-making. Her most positive archetype is Athena—wise and strategic—while her shadow appears as a predatory black widow who drains others. In pop-cultural terms, Bellatrix Lestrange exemplifies the shadow aspect: cruel and ruthless yet powerful, trusted within a male domain, and fiercely authentic.

Meaning
The Queen of Swords is the woman who is using her head to rule her heart and get ahead in the world. For many centuries she's got bad press as ice-cold and calculating, as too masculine and unfeeling and as inherently barren, frigid and evil. In modern times she gives us a more positive message showing us that women have a reason to exist that is not defined by their fathers, husbands and children. They can have a career, make independent decisions and be their own person. The most positive archetype for the Queen of Swords is the Greek goddess Athena, the most negative the black widow who kills her men by sucking them dry.
Exploring the Card
Bellatrix Lestrange shows more of the shadow side of this card than its positive meaning. She is cruel, sadistic and ruthless, but she is also the only female Death Eater we know of, the only woman to apparently possess the Dark Lord's trust and to be able to break into an entirely male domain. She is a powerful witch who knows what she wants, and even though she fights firmly on the dark side she possesses both loyalty and authenticity.
Visual Description
A pale, stern woman sits in a voluminous dark gown, turned in profile to the right with a hard, observant expression. She holds a short dagger loosely in one hand while the other rests on her skirt, and intricate embroidery and fastenings mark her fitted bodice. Behind her an arched window frames clouded light that forms a skull-like visage, and stylized ornamental flourishes border the scene.
