The Moon
The Moon signifies a period of uncertainty and illusion where appearances are deceptive and nothing is entirely what it seems. It emphasizes that the Fool cannot trust purely physical senses and must rely on spirit and intuition while inner fears and subconscious images can surface and grip him. The card advises against making major decisions now, urging investigation beneath the surface or patience until daylight brings clarity. It reminds you that the darkness is temporary and that keeping faith in your guiding star will prevent panic. Reversed, it prompts self-examination about whether one prefers confusion or seeks out risky, uncertain situations to avoid responsibility.

Description
Just like any good story... or any real life... things don't stay easy for long. It's a good thing the Fool found his star because in the Moon card he faces a lot of uncertainty. In the strange glow of the moon, things are both bright and dark. Nothing is what it seems. Monsters appear as friends and friends can appear as monsters. The Fool feels like he cannot trust his physical senses and has to rely on his spirit and his intuition to guide him. That's not so easy because being in a state of external fear makes it really easy for internal fears to crawl out of the subconscious (like that lobster emerging from the water) and grip him with its claws of terror. Unless he keeps his eyes and his faith on his North Star, the Fool will begin to panic.
Divinatory meaning
Even if you think you have all the facts, you probably don't. There is more going on here than meets the eye. Making decisions right now is problematic because it is hard to know what is true and what is false. These issues can be either internal or external (and sometimes both at the same time). The dark is temporary and eventually the light of day will bring clarity.
Advice
Try not to make decisions right now and instead dig below the surface to determine what is real and what isn't. If you can't figure it out, just wait and time will take care of it.
Reversed
If reversed, ask yourself: Do I like wandering in the dark and feeling confused because it relieves me of the responsibility for my actions or gives me an excuse? Do I put myself in dangerous or uncertain situations on purpose?
Visual Description
A robed woman kneels in shallow water beneath a large crescent set inside a glowing full moon against a pink-purple sky. Two white canines stand on either side of her and a red lobster or crayfish crawls up from the water at her lap. Twin houses or towers flank the scene, with stylized trees and star-like sparkles around the luminous moon; a banner at the bottom reads "The Moon" and the top shows the Roman numeral XVIII.
