Royo Dark tarot
The Royo Dark Tarot was created by acclaimed Spanish fantasy artist Luis Royo and published by Lo Scarabeo in 2012. Royo (born 1954 in Olalla, Teruel, Spain) is one of the most recognized fantasy illustrators in the world, known for cover art for Heavy Metal magazine, Tor Books, and Berkley Books, with over 250 book covers to his name. He won the Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence has requested his self-portrait for their collection. The Royo Dark Tarot is an expanded and updated version of his earlier Black Tarot, featuring larger cards, better quality images, and fully illustrated Minor Arcana. A mini edition was also released.
Official Website →Art Style & Visual Character
The artwork is quintessential Luis Royo — dark fantasy rendered with extraordinary technical mastery. Shimmering nightscapes are dominated by deadly female warriors, noble armored knights, and luminescent nature creatures. The color palette is dark and moody with rich detail. The deck features significant female nudity shown in various levels of strength and vulnerability, alongside erotic themes, dystopian landscapes, and beautiful heroines. The art is lavish, cinematic, and darkly sensual — more akin to high-end fantasy illustration than traditional tarot art. Content warnings include nudity, violence, cutting, and bondage imagery.
Core Concept & Symbolism
The deck follows the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition but in a subtle, reimagined way. If you saw the images without titles, you might not immediately identify which card they represent, but seeing the card name with the image reveals the connection clearly. This subtlety allows readers to gain new levels of understanding or see cards from fresh perspectives. The deck best illuminates the psychology of a person and sexuality, making it particularly suited to deep psychological readings. The dark fantasy framework transforms traditional archetypes into mythic warriors, sorceresses, and otherworldly beings.
Reading Experience
Faery Garden's review notes that the deck "blends magnificent art with dark fantasy and gothic themes as well as traditional Tarot card meanings to create a deck that is not just a cool dark deck, but one that you will want to study and read with on a regular basis." Astrologyk's review highlights that "in terms of reading, the Royo Dark can be surprisingly insightful if a bit menacing." Reception is generally positive among fans of dark fantasy art, though some practitioners purchase it purely as a collectible art piece rather than a working deck. It is not recommended for casual readers due to its intense imagery and mature themes.
