Card 9

The Hermit

Brief Description

The Hermit represents a period of voluntary isolation and introspection, where one withdraws from worldly concerns to seek inner wisdom and enlightenment. The card suggests a phase of spiritual reflection, possibly accompanied by depression tinged with hope, as the seeker searches for deeper truths within themselves. While this withdrawal may seem antisocial, it serves as a protective cocoon for transformation and rebirth. The card challenges you to decide whether to shed old patterns and dogma or remain trapped in the past while searching for meaning.

Symbolism

The Hermit in this deck is quite classical in representation. The coffin shows that he has buried himself, not 'coming out' for celebration, but choosing to remain in solitude. The coffin also represents a kind of womb of life, salvation and redemption, a protective shell, hope for rebirth - that cocoon which a butterfly wraps around itself. His clothing displays his dogmatism, multilayered nature, desire to hide and withdraw from all worldly matters. His pose is quite relaxed; he is simply resting and feels comfortable in this position - he is in his 'element.' The lantern shows us that he has decided to delve into the light of knowledge, into nostalgia, to illuminate his actions and deeds, to contemplate everything. The surrounding flowers show that although he is 'called' from above, with offerings, given everything needed to exit this box, he doesn't care about any of it - it doesn't concern him. The centipede, almost the main character of this arcanum, carries the belief that the soul of a deceased person who sinned greatly enters the insect and comes to his home so as not to leave it. It could also point the way to gold, to riches - in our case, spiritual ones.

Message of the Card

Looking from above, the person is currently internally lonely, possibly experiencing depression with a note of hope and optimism, isolated from real life with focus on themselves (the reasons need to be examined with additional cards). The arcanum itself is not collective and is literally torn from society. There is also some divergence from the classical hermit in the sphere of money - he shields himself from money, from material goods, spending long periods digging in the dirt searching for gold.

Advice

The advice from this card is: You need to finally shed these clothes, this dogmatism, cast off something old. But here a question arises - will you be able to part with the past, or will you continue searching there for a ray of light?

Visual Description

An aged, skeletal bearded figure in a green robe with red trim crouches inside a coffin-like frame, holding a glowing lantern that casts a greenish light. The interior of the coffin is lined with pale, gathered fabric and a skeletal foot and hand are visible near the bottom. A patterned dark floral background surrounds the coffin, and the title "The Hermit" is printed at the bottom of the card. Roman numerals "XI" appear on the left and right margins of the card.
