Imagery Description
Among a smoke laden landscape, The Devil cloaks himself in black linen and looms above two grievously troubled figures. The characters, originally featured within The Lovers, are now disheveled, and loosely bound in serpentine rope. An altar is created before The Devil, using a veiled bed with candles atop its posts. The two figures become offerings as they wallow despairingly in their vices. With hunched shoulders and backs, the figures’ postures exude shame. Those who once stood proud in merriment now succumb to the command of the shrouded source above them.
Symbolic References
The bed within The Devil makes four appearances through the series, including The Fool, The World, and Nine of Swords, where it serves as a stage for transformation.
