Sweet Twilight tarot

Sweet Twilight tarot

The Tarot of the Sweet Twilight was created by Argentine-Italian artist Cristina Benintende and published by Lo Scarabeo. The deck was released in multiple editions — the original Italian edition (Lo Scarabeo, 2009) and a later English/Spanish bilingual edition distributed through Llewellyn Worldwide. It comes with the standard Lo Scarabeo multilingual little white book (LWB). Benintende is also known for the Fey Tarot, and her distinctive artistic voice is immediately recognizable across both decks.

Art Style & Visual Character

Benintende's artwork is frequently compared to Tim Burton's films — slightly surreal, vibrantly colored, and populated by whimsical, sometimes eerie characters with oversized eyes and exaggerated proportions. Deep, rich colors dominate with a soft, warm, and bold overall feel. The imagery evokes a world balanced on the cusp between light and dark, day and night, wakefulness and sleep — a liminal "sweet twilight" zone. There are playful pop-culture references scattered throughout: The Hermit evokes Rob Zombie, Strength features a Yoda-like figure, and the Ace of Wands reminds viewers of James and the Giant Peach. Some describe the aesthetic as trippy "Alice in Wonderland" meets animated film.

Core Concept & Symbolism

The deck is based on personal symbolism rather than traditional esoteric, elemental, or Qabalistic frameworks. Benintende created each card's imagery from her own intuitive associations, and the accompanying booklet deliberately asks more questions than it answers — guiding the reader toward self-discovery rather than providing fixed interpretations. A notable feature is that Benintende has given interpretations that offer solutions or ways out of the difficulty each card traditionally represents, making even challenging cards feel constructive. The result is a deeply personal, intuition-driven deck that rewards readers who bring their own symbolic vocabulary to the table.

Reading Experience

The deck has developed a devoted following, with readers reporting they return to it again and again. One reviewer described losing their heart to the deck, and multiple readers have purchased backup copies. The Llewellyn review notes it is an excellent journaling tool that works best when you go slow, let go of preconceived meanings, and rely on intuition. However, the personal nature of the symbolism means readers who prefer to learn from books may struggle — the imagery is often obscure to those expecting standard RWS visual cues. It is most suited for intermediate to advanced readers already familiar with traditional imagery, as the deck adds a whole new dimension to established meanings.
