King of Wands

Brief Description

The King of Wands as Herne the Hunter represents an imposing, transformative leader bound to primal and supernatural forces. His legend—wounded huntsman saved with sacred antlers—connects him to the strength and rootedness of trees, which symbolize the three levels of the psyche. Sensing spirits suggests the dissolution of rigid rational barriers and the rising influence of innate senses on perception. Practically, the card indicates that someone in authority may offer advice or that you may need to assume leadership and be willing to take risks to make things happen.

Story

Herne the Hunter, who appears in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, was an imposing ghostly figure on a phantom steed. Legend described Herne as a beloved huntsman who was in the service of Richard II. After sustaining a mortal injury, he was saved by a wizard who tied sacred antlers to his head. But betrayal led to disgrace, prompting Herne to hang himself. Herne stands confident and strong like the trees and blends magically into their organic matter. The trees are symbolic of the three levels of the psyche. Sensing the presence of spirits may be an indication that one is dissolving the barriers of rational thinking and allowing innate senses to influence perception.

Divinatory meaning

Someone in the position of authority may offer advice. You may need to assume a leadership role and be willing to take risks to make things happen.
