Card 40 • cups

Five of Cups

Brief Description

The Five of Cups represents the difficult but necessary process of letting go of what no longer serves you. While releasing familiar attachments can be painful, decisive action to break free from negative patterns is sometimes the only way to move forward. The card encourages courage to embrace new beginnings, understanding that temporary pain is often an indicator of personal growth and transformation.

The Scene of Release

A young person leans over a steep cliff, deliberately throwing three cups into the river waters below. Two others remain standing at the edge, with air bubbles rising animatedly in the liquid within them—they are relieved to have avoided the fate that befell their 'brothers.' The person decided it would not be enough to simply pour out the contents of the three cups that had irritated him: he cast the vessels from the cliff until he freed himself from their annoying influence.

The Pain of Letting Go

Releasing what has become habitual and familiar can be a painful experience, but sometimes decisive and final separation from it is the only way to move forward. Instead of spinning in an endless whirlpool of doubt and uncertainty, it is better to lose something familiar, already experienced, in order to make room for new, more positive energy.

Growth Through Pain

Pain is a temporary phenomenon—it is an indicator of your growth. Have the courage to begin a new chapter of your life.

Visual Description

A dark, hooded figure leans over the edge of a cliff on the left, reaching down toward a vertical line of three pale, falling shapes that descend into a churning pool below. The background is a riot of concentric, swirling brushstrokes in greens, reds, pinks and yellows, suggesting turbulent wind or water. The surface below reflects the same broken strokes as rippling water, with multicolored dabs across it. At the very bottom of the image the printed title reads "FIVE of CHALICES."
