Description of the Image

He sits on top of a dragon, confident and bold. He knows that in this life, he has achieved the desire of his heart and is overflowing with riches. Therefore, he plays a tune while sitting on this high ledge. He allows his accumulated wealth to pour out in the song he plays on a flute, letting it rain down on the parched earth beneath him. The dry ground calls out for this aid, extending thorny tendrils, welcoming the rain of life and the blessing of his song.

Meaning

The Six of Pentacles symbolizes periods of dependency between those who have something and those who have nothing. A young sapling breaks through the sludge, mud, and neglect under the shower of life-giving energy and abundance pouring from above.

The flutist does not see or notice this, perhaps thinking he is part of a one-sided equation of generosity; but, at the same time, the plants and branches support the elevated wall he has climbed. Their roots creep into the cracks and strengthen the structure with their living network, protecting it from destruction, supporting it. One supports the other, like the Ouroboros, a self-sustaining cycle.

Explanation

Ouroboros, a mythological world serpent that encircles the Earth, grabbing its own tail. It was considered a symbol of infinite rebirth, the transient nature of things, and one of the first symbols of infinity in human history. The Ouroboros is also a symbol of self-reference, cyclicity, similar to the phoenix, and the idea of original unity. In alchemy, the Ouroboros symbolizes the completion of the Great Work and is sometimes depicted as an 'eight'. In the philosophy of history, it represents the doctrine of eternal return. The fact that one side of the serpent is depicted as light and the other as dark reflects the eternal unity and struggle of opposites (cf. Yin and Yang).
