Description of the card

Emerging from the ocean's endless mist is the messenger of Death mounted upon a pale white horse. Dressed in ghostly linens, both the horse and rider arrive from the unknown; they are prepared to escort us toward a new beginning, ensuring that the old chapters of our lives are left behind. A black flag, which bears a white rose, signifies the purity of death and the resurrection that follows it. The Death card is often feared and misunderstood, and only until one understands that the messenger of Death is performing his duty without ill intent, will the character’s presence be accepted.

Personal reflections

The cloaked rider within the composition depicts a spectral figure that appears during my Sleep Paralysis experiences. The horse and rider act as messengers, delivering information in the form of imagery or words. They stand halfway submerged in the water, stoic and ominous, ready to transit a message beyond the realm of sleep. As I continue to have these dreams throughout my life, I often wonder if the figures that I see are, indeed, messengers? Or are they under the command of some other unseen force? I embrace and accept my dreams, but it was only recently that I began to release my former hate for the figures within them. Reframing my perspective of the figures as messengers has opened my mind to new information that would otherwise be excluded due to fear.

Artistic representation

The horse depicted in Death is a fiberglass sculpture, and it serves as the model for all mounted characters within the series. No live animals were used within the creation of The Somnia Tarot out of respect for their welfare.
