Symbolism and Perspective
The Hanged Man undergoes an ordeal that challenges both his mind, body, and spirit. Suspended by one ankle that is bound in rope, the character experiences the world upside down. An allegorical depiction of ego death is performed. An inverse triangle is formed by the character's shoulders and head. This triangle points downward and represents the alchemical symbol for water. The Hanged Man's fate is comparable to those of countless philosophers and thinkers from the past. We also may experience this ordeal internally when we achieve ourselves to see an alternate perspective. In this moment of self-reflection, the character may soon experience a sense of tranquility while assuming this acrobatic pose. We can find the brightest side of this moment by turning the card upside down, where our character now appears to perform a joyful dance. Whether The Hanged Man was placed in this situation for punishment, or he voluntarily assumed the inverted position for enlightenment, we can be assured that this ordeal will bring forth a life changing revelation.
Personal Reflection
I enacted The Hanged Man for this challenging and difficult self-portrait. The character's act of ultimate surrender and suspension directly correlates to my experiences with Sleep Paralysis, where I find myself paralyzed, immobile, and at the mercy of my dreams. I have also endured similar inversions during various out-of-body moments following the conclusion of Sleep Paralysis episodes. Although the creation of this image was arduous, it is therapeutic for me to transform my negative experiences into positive works of art.
