23 The Engineer

I will make time for myself to focus without distractions.

The Engineer is off shift, relaxing, when her communicator beeps. 'Engineering! Where are you? I need that pulse-defragmenter repaired yesterday!!' She leaps up, making her way to the maintenance tunnels. The ship's halls are packed with noisy crew. But once she enters the cool, quiet tunnels, she feels calm. This is her domain. As long as she has her peace and quiet, she’s confident she can solve even the most complex problem with the ship.

The Engineer can solve any complicated problem that comes up on a starship. To work at her best, however, she needs uninterrupted time to focus and immerse herself in the task. She knows how to get into a state of flow and uses it to her advantage. Our galaxy is full of distractions. Technology is incredible and helps us in so many ways, but it can also affect our ability to focus and prevent us from working to our full potential. Next time you have a project to work on or a problem to solve, try dedicating some uninterrupted time to it. Turn off your communicator, seal the hatches, and concentrate deeply on your work.

Try spending some time without technology at your fingertips. Allow yourself to be bored and let your mind wander. It can be good to give your brain some space for your subconscious to work in the background! Consider setting some boundaries with people at home or work so they know when to leave you uninterrupted and you can get your important work done.
