Symbolism of the statue
The statue of Justice proudly stands atop a stone wall, braving all elements. The statue is mounted for all to see as it wields a double-edged sword and a scale. These tools are used to balance judgement and defend what is right. A blindfold adorns the statue, conveying a lack of bias toward the judged. This figure represents a system of ideals that should protect us all.
Human element and imperfections
Nonetheless, it is impossible to achieve absolute perfection within a governmental agency. The ropes that begin to tie the statue represent both the human ability to negatively bend the justice system, as well as a constructive means to remove a symbol for it no longer serves all individuals within its domain.
Creation and fall of the statue
The statue was created by covering a mannequin with a cotton sheet and plaster. I photographed this scene on a stormy September morning. After hours of battling heavy winds, the statue tipped and fell to the earth below.
